The edit that works for a same-day radio replay is wrong for a podcast. Similarly, the edit that works for a podcast is wrong for a social clip. The edit that works for a social clip is not right for the archive. the source is the same, but there are four different destinations. When you edit for repurposing, each platform requires unique editorial standards.
Most shows treat editing as a single process. Get the basics right by removing time references, tightening the audio, and double-checking the length, then push the same file to every platform. The result is content that’s acceptable everywhere, but optimized nowhere.
You end up with a podcast edit that includes the station’s call letters. That’s not horrible, but it’s not as important to a podcast listener discovering the personalities in a new environment. Or you have a social clip that takes 40 seconds to get to the moment that would make someone stop scrolling.
Platform-specific editing is about focusing on the right work for the right destination, which often means the same source material gets two or three different edits, each shorter and more targeted than the last.
Edit For Repurposing: Radio Replay
The radio replay edit has one job. The content must sound like it belongs in the current moment when it’s replayed. Everything else is secondary.
The essential edits: Remove all time-of-day, day-of-week, date, and season references. Then take out anything that refers to other segments that aired before or after this one. Teases, promo mentions, and any time-sensitive content has to go. Everything that places the content in a specific moment that suggests the content isn’t relevant to the listener at any given time should be removed.
The optional improvements: Tighten loose setups, which might require replacing a line or two to make it make sense without taking as much time, Remove dead ends that didn’t pay off. Smooth the transitions between thoughts, talking points, and phone calls. Add some phone calls that didn’t make the original break. Insert new cast comments that improve the content. These are improvements, not requirements.
The format considerations: Same-day replays can be lighter edits because you have a time crunch, and the content is still contextually current. The audience hasn’t moved far from the world it was created in. Next-day and horizontal recycling replays need more thorough treatment because the distance is greater. An edit that’s safe for same-day replay may not be safe for horizontal recycling two days later.
