Radio personalities walk a tightrope every day. On one side is the constant challenge of relevance, resonance, and ratings. On the other hand, it’s avoiding being offensive, outrage, and the risk of cancellation. And the rope is getting thinner. As an air personality, do you avoid topics out of fear of being fired, getting into trouble with management, or being canceled? Probably.
Many personalities avoid controversial or sensitive topics altogether, not because they don’t have something to say, but because they fear the consequences. Getting fired. Losing advertisers. Getting reprimanded by corporate. Losing an endorsement. Or simply being labeled “problematic.”
That fear is real, but if you’re afraid of offending anyone, you’ll eventually interest no one.
