Every programmer says it: “We just want to keep it simple. We need to dumb down contests and idiot-proof them.” They’re right. Contests must be simple or your audience will become confused, and that is a very bad thing. But simple is only half of the equation. A contest that’s easy to understand but boring to hear isn’t a success. You may appeal to 2% of the Cume (those lovable Prize Pigs), but everyone else tunes it out. The real challenge (and art) of contest design is making it simple to follow, fun to play, and entertaining to hear. Keep it simple, but make it fun.
