A fundamental step in creating a radio station or show strategy is defining a target listener. A poorly defined target has caused many stations to fail. That’s why I recommend stations get deeper into the targeting process by building a target audience persona. But no matter how you create your target, collecting information about the audience is a good place to start. I recommend the OAR method.

The OAR method of compiling information is a simple process of three steps to get to know the audience better.

To apply the OAR method, you should have already compiled basic demographic characteristics of your audience: age, geography, perhaps even socio-economic levels, etc. If you haven’t done so yet, check out how to Build an Audience Persona.

OAR advances the profile data to learn about the audience’s lifestyle, behaviors and attitudes, all essential building blocks for creating emotional connections.
