Positive reinforcement is a sound coaching strategy if it causes the performer to grow. Some coaches pile on the praise because it’s easier than correcting weaknesses. However, praise must be carefully focused on reinforcing positive behavior as the personality pursues a current performance goal. Encouragement should be specific, not gratuitous. It should cause talents to want to achieve more. The ultimate goal is that praise should inspire greater effort by inspiring personalities.
