Prank calls work because they provide a dramatic story for listeners to follow. The downside is if the risk that a call becomes rude or mean-spirited, obviously a trait you don’t want attached to your personality. That risk is mitigated with listeners pranking listeners.
Setting up a feature with listeners playing jokes on other listeners requires extra creativity and takes a little longer in setting up the feature. But it can also work well, as evidenced by DeDe in the Morning at K104 in Dallas.
