Clock Structure

Optimize For Nielsen: Stop Sets In Drive Times

Few things are more consistent than the routines of commuters in the morning and afternoon drive. People leave for work at the same time. They arrive at the same time. And they head home at the same time—often with a precision that would impress an air traffic controller. For radio programmers, this isn’t just trivia. It’s a strategic opportunity. And yet, many stations stubbornly use identical clocks across every daypart, as if the listening environment at 10 am mirrors that of 8 am or 5 pm. It doesn’t. It’s time to rethink clocks in general and commercial placement in particular, but stop sets in drive times are dramatically different than how you should place commercials during other time slots.
