Hooks And Setups

The Anecdotal Hook

Personal stories—anecdotes—hold a unique power. They create a bridge between the speaker and the audience, making the content relatable and memorable. However, personal stories can come off as self-absorbed if they fail to make a connection to the listener’s world. An anecdotal hook leverages this power to draw listeners in with a compelling story that sets the stage for what will happen.

But be forewarned: Anecdotal hooks are dangerous and require more (not less) time in preparation.
