The Art Of Conversation on Team Shows: It’s an Ensemble, Not A Drum Solo

Most rock concerts eventually feature a drum solo. You can tell it’s happening because the beer and restroom lines get longer and longer. The radio version of a drum solo prompts listeners to reach for the scan button.

In an aircheck meeting, the morning team listened and smiled. They expected the feedback to be positive because the six-minute segment contained many excellent moments. There were funny moments and personal anecdotes, and the show revealed character traits. It wasn’t hard to find things to praise. But something was off. Each of the three was doing their own thing. They were playing the same song, but it wasn’t in synch. They were all playing a drum solo. Great shows are performed as an ensemble.
