There’s a reason people turn on the radio. It’s not to get the news, even though they’ll take it. Traffic might help them avoid a wreck, but it’s not the reason they choose a station. It’s not even to hear music. They can get that anywhere, and with no commercials. People come to your station because they want to feel something. They want to laugh, forget the email inbox, the dirty dishes, the passive-aggressive Slack messages, and the credit card balance. They want to escape, and you’re their ticket. You’re a little island of escape in a sea of stress. Many programmers and shows know that and believe it, and go out of their way to manufacture it or prefabricate it. But here’s the truth that too many stations ignore:
