Hooks And Setups

Mastering The Setup Q&A

The Mastering The Setup seminar is one of the most popular seminars we’ve ever offered. It has inspired a lot of questions. In this Mastering The Setup Q&A, Tracy Johnson answers all of the questions here.

Mastering The Setup Q&A

Q: What is the ideal length for a Setup that will keep the audience engaged and not violate the 7-second rule?
A: The ideal length for a Setup depends on several factors. Generally, as I define the Setup in the seminar, it’s 4-6 lines, lasting no more than 15-20 seconds. The first two lines set the topic with an attitude. That’s followed by a couple of lines that define the premise and support the established topic. The premise lines act as a bridge to the meat of the story. The exact length can vary, of course, but the key is to hook listeners quickly without making the introduction too lengthy or losing their interest.

Q: Can the techniques taught in this seminar be applied to various radio formats, such as news, talk, or music radio shows?

A: Yes, the techniques taught in “Mastering The Setup” can be applied to any radio format, including news, talk, or music radio shows. In fact, the concepts apply to any spoken word medium. The core principles of crafting an engaging Setup remain the same, but the approach may need to be adapted to suit the specific format, target audience, and style of your show.
